It was a pleasure to announce the 26th Annual Cinéfest happening in Sudbury. Every year, the festival organizers outdo themselves by securing the best full-length film features, shorts, documentaries and animation productions from across Canada and around the world. Over the past 26 years, Cinéfest Sudbury has created a place for Canadian cinema to shine and be seen as well as supporting this exciting industry. I want to thank Tammy Frick and the Cinéfest Sudbury staff and board of directors for their hard work bringing this terrific film schedule together.
Tuesday was the 50th Anniversary of the Big Nickel! I was so honoured to be part of this historic day. The Big Nickel is a tribute to our great city’s primary industry of nickel mining, but we know over the years, it has become so much more. It has become a world-renowned landmark and a photo opportunity for countless travelers along the Trans-Canada Highway. On behalf of City Council, and all Greater Sudburians, I offer sincere gratitude to Ted Szilva and his family for all they have done for our city. And to Jim Marchbank and other visionaries at Science North and Dynamic Earth, I congratulate all who have helped this wonderful icon develop into a global attraction.
I was honoured to help announce the Fabio Belli Memorial Soccer Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. Fabio loved amateur sports and supported it whenever and wherever possible. This is an important local and provincial tournament, drawing dozens of teams from across Ontario. It is widely anticipated by players, coaches and spectators. I want to thank all of the organizers, volunteers and sponsors of this fun-filled event. I wish all participants the best of luck on July 19 and 20!
